The name of the
city is derived from Goddess of power known as Shri Chandika.
Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is
the only Indian city to have been designed and planned by a
single architect – Le Corbusier. Infact, this was to be the
first planned city of India. It was built in 1953. It is
administered by the Central Government and is hence classified
as an Union Territory. Chandigarh is famous for its wide roads
and spacious residential colonies and is an excellent base for
specialized sightseeing. Chandigarh is surrounded by Shivalik
Hills.
Chandigarh is
as much cosmopolitan in nature as any other Indian town with
numerous temples, mosques, shrines and bhawans located through
out the city. The traditions followed in the city are a mix of
many traditions followed through out the country. One can see
and participate in almost, all of the religious activities of
every religion in the country [Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam.
People of Chandigarh speak in Punjabi or Hindi or a
combination of the two. Chandigarh differs from many other
cities of the region in that it has attracted people from
throughout the India. Most of the people in Chandigarh are
service people.

enjoys an extreme climate with hot summers (March to June) and
chilly winters (November to February). The monsoon season,
though pleasant in the evenings, is very humid during the
daytime. The best season to visit Chandigarh is autumn (August
to November), when the weather is pleasant, neither too hot,
nor too cold.
